For home users or small businesses that need a no-frills PC, Gateway's new 310 Series offers an affordable solution with a lot of room for expansion. Gateway is currently offering three different configurations that are aimed at three levels of need.

The most basic system, the 310SE, starts at $399.99, which does not include a monitor. Adding a standard 17-inch monitor ($149) to the system increases the base price to $548.99. The Gateway 310SE comes with an Intel Celeron Processor, 128MB of memory, a 40GB hard drive, a CD-ROM drive, external speakers, and WinXP Home.

All models in the series have a 56Kbps PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) data/fax modem, an integrated 10/100 Ethernet adapter, six USB 2.0 ports (two in front and four in back), a parallel port, and a serial port. For
future expansion the systems include three empty PCI slots, two external 5.25-inch bays, two external 3.5-inch bays, and one internal 3.5-inch bay.

Bundled software includes Microsoft Works 7.0, which consists of word processor, spreadsheet, database, and calendar software. A 90-day introductory version of Norton AntiVirus is also included.

The 310 series has two additional system configurations: the Gateway 310S ($599.99) and the Gateway 310X ($699.99). The systems are similar to the 310SE; however, both the 310S and the 310X include a 17-inch monitor. For optical drives, the 310S is bundled with a CD-RW/DVD combo drive and the 310X includes separate CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives. The 310X also uses an Intel Pentium 4 processor rather than the Intel Celeron processor that powers the 310SE and 310S models. WinXP Pro is available on the 310S and the 310X for an additional $100, and the 310X comes standard with Microsoft Works Suite 2003, which includes Word and Encarta.

With the base systems, Gateway backs its 310 Series with a Value Service Plan, which is essentially a 90-day warranty for parts and labor. This plan does not include on-site or technical support. A number of other service plans are avaliable, such as the three-Year ValuePlus Service Plan, with on-site and technical support for $149.99.
